Teacup Chihuahua

Teacup Chihuahua Myth
So you have heard of chihuahua breed that is small enough to fit in a teacup or that can stand in your hand. You are wondering where you can get these tiny dogs and what they are like. Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no such breed exists. Teacup chihuahuas are a myth made up from breeders that strive to get the smallest Chihuahua Puppies possible, most the time at the expense of the dogs. So, in a way, Teacup Chihuahuas do exist, but they are not a different breed, or any different than your normal chihuahua. They are just the runts of the breed.

How do breeders create Teacup Chihuahuas?

This is the sad, and controversial, part of this breed. This is also why it is important to do some research on your chihuahua breeder before you buy any chihuahua puppies. Breeders try and create these cute teacup chihuahua puppies by taking the runts of their litters and barely feeding them. They feed the little dogs enough to keep them alive, but hope to stunt their growth so they stay very small. They are already the runts of the litter and very small as puppies. After this, they take these malnourished, tiny chihuahuas and breed them. The end result is what the breeders hope is a litter of runts. Anyone with a heart would find this practice despicable and should be punished.

Should I buy a Teacup Chihuahua?

This is a tough question to answer, and the answer is maybe. You definitely should not buy a teacup chihuahua from these breeders that try and create them. In addition to supporting the breeders harsh industry, these dogs are not healthy. They are generally malnourished which can cause a whole host of problems. In addition, they can suffer shortened life spans and other health problems later in life because of the extreme dwarfing. It is not healthy for a normal teacup chihuahua that is that small to be bred even if it did not suffer from all of these harsh conditions. In fact, chihuahua breeding is one of the most problematic dog breeds because of their small size to begin with. However, it is possible to find health, small chihuahuas that were just the runt of a healthy litter. They can still be tiny, and very healthy and happy dogs. It is important to buy from a responsible breeder that does not engage in these shady activities.

Thank you for sharing the information about teacups. It's maddening and upsetting. Being a chihuahua momma of rescues I couldn't imagine harming them in any ways. I also lost one because with her puppies she went into calcium shot not long after birth. A concidence of a small breed having a larger litter (4 pups). I never sold my puppies and only gave them to other chihuahua lovers. Thanks again.
